Trains to and from Nuremberg Airport (NUE)
Nürnberg Airport trains serve passengers via the metro services U-Bahn 2, which connect the airport with the main train station and the city centre in a train journey that lasts just 12 minutes. Leaving at frequent intervals, the U-Bahn 2 trains allow passengers to catch trains to Erlangen, Stuttgart, Munich, Bamberg and Fuerth for example.
From the old city centre passengers can travel via regional or fast long distance trains on Germany’s vast rail network to all the major cities in the federal state of Bavaria and beyond. There are even train connections and discounted rail tickets available for train journeys into the neighbouring Czech Republic. The “Reisezentrum”, the German Railway travel centre, can help with both tickets and information on special railway holidays as well as local connections.
In just under an hour one can reach the beautiful city of Bamberg with trains from Nürnberg Airport, changing at the main train station in the city centre. This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of Europe’s best preserved examples of a medieval city. There are more than 1,000 buildings that date back to the Middle Ages and parts of the old city walls remain, together with a castle, numerous churches, a stunning Town Hall that literally straddles two sides of a river and more painted facades, art collections and historic treasures than one could possibly see in one day.
Also in just under 60 minutes with Nürnberg Airport trains one can reach the ancient town of Schwäbisch Hall, where the old town now consist mainly of half-timbered 18th century houses. During the summer months the town holds the famous Theatre auf den Treppen (theatre on the stairs) in front of the lovely St. Michael’s Church that is perched on the highest point of the town and overlooks the old market square. Traversed by two rivers, the town also has a small island and park at its heart, where a replica of Shakespeare’s London theatre invites tourists and locals to enjoy some of world theatre’s most popular plays throughout the summer.
The short journey by service U-2 Nürnberg Airport trains into the city centre allows passengers to leave their luggage in the main train station’s lockers and explore the Old Town on foot. Signposting leads tourists within a short walk to some of the most wonderful sights in the city, as well as into temptation to try some of the local delicatessen at the many cafes and bakeries along the way.
Nürnberg Airport trains run regularly throughout the day at 10 to 15 minute intervals. Tickets can be bought from the ticket machines in the metro train station. It is illegal to ride a train without a valid ticket and passengers doing so will be fined at least EUR 40.00 for the offence. At the main train station passengers will find the Reisezentrum, where information about onward travel can be obtained along with tickets to all train station destinations in Germany. The main train station also has several cafes, shopping facilities and restaurants, where passengers can enjoy a meal and refreshments before continuing their journey.
