Hamburg Airport Departures (HAM)

Taking off from Hamburg Airport, the oldest German airport, offers departing passengers amazing views over the city and surrounding fields and forests. Hamburg Airport has been transformed since the 1990s, when new runways, terminal facilities, shops and parking facilities were added. Now Hamburg Airport is a state-of-the-art aviation hub, but looking closely, one can still see structures which originated in 1911, when the airport was first constructed.

Hamburg Airport departures will find services provided in two terminal buildings. There are information desks on the ground level at both terminals. Terminal 2, which was the first to be inaugurated in 1993, is the base for Lufthansa and other partners of Star Alliance such as Germanwings and Condor.

Modern German architecture promotes eco-friendly alternatives to traditional building methods and materials. The airport has many features which reduce energy and water consumption in both terminal buildings.

Departures at Hamburg Airport can board flights with some of the world’s major airlines:

  • Air Berlin flies twice every week during the winter season from Hamburg to Palma.
  • Regular flights from Hamburg to Moscow, Kiev, and St Petersburg are offered by Aeroflot, Aerosvit and Rossiya.
  • Air Transat links Hamburg with Toronto.
  • Aeroplanes from Boeing 757-200 of Continental Airlines/United cover the New York-Newark route on a daily basis.
  • Airline Emirates supplies scheduled flights to Dubai on a daily basis.

Hamburg Airport departures can also board domestic flights to all major German cities as well as international flights operated by British Airways to London and other European destinations.

Hamburg Airport departures can use the route planner on the airport’s official website to obtain the quickest route to the airport. There are many taxi services operating between the city centre and the airport, some even operate minibuses to take several passengers in the most cost effective manner to the departures’ terminal.

Motorists can reach the airport by taking the B433 (the 3rd ring road) of the A7 expressway. City bus services also link city centre locations to the airport. The S1 suburban metro train network connects the city centre and Hamburg Airport.

Hamburg Airport departures with a little time on their hands prior to boarding should visit the airport plaza, where many branded outlets are located for an excellent shopping experience. Shopping facilities include newsagents, book shops, fashion and fashion accessories, flowers and souvenirs, groceries, luggage and travel accessories, perfume and toiletries, shoes and electronic goods.

Departures at Hamburg Airport won’t go hungry or thirsty either. There are plenty of culinary temptations to be found at the terminals, where passengers can sample specialities of the North German region. Several restaurants, cafes and bars provide passengers with snacks, meals and refreshments

The airport also provides facilities for departures at Hamburg Airport who require disabled toilets or wheelchair services. Parents travelling with children will find baby changing facilities provided throughout the terminal buildings. There are banking facilities, ATMs, a bureau de change and a pharmacy.

For a rest prior to boarding the flight Hamburg Airport departures should head to the comfortable departure lounges, where cafes serve refreshment and shops provide duty free shopping prior to take off. All departure gates are clearly signposted, but passengers are reminded that some gates can be quite some distance from the check-in, so plenty of time should be allocated for boarding.
