Getting to Hamburg Airport by Car
Motorists travelling by car from outside Hamburg can get to the airport via the A 7 motorway, using exit Schnelsen-Nord in the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein; travelling from the Federal State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern motorists should follow the A 1 motorway and then the A24 motorway, taking exit Horn at A24.
Motorists arriving from the Federal State of Niedersachsen should take the A7 motorway, using exit Schnelsen-Nord to reach Hamburg Airport. The airport’s approach is pretty well signposted no matter which direction drivers are travelling from.

Getting to Hamburg Airport by Train
Travelling by train to Hamburg Airport is also quick and convenient. Heading for the Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) from whatever major city in Germany a visitors finds him or herself in, once can board the metro train line S1, which runs every ten minutes throughout the day and connects the Hauptbahnhof to Hamburg Airport in just under 25 minutes.

Getting to Hamburg Airport by Bus
Frequent bus services takes passengers from the city to the airport. Stopping right outside the arrivals and departure terminals, city buses pick up passengers just outside the main train station / Hauptbahnhof and many destinations within the city.
The actual main bus terminal is located south-east of the Hauptbahnhof building between Adenaurallee and Kurt-Schuhmacher-Allee. The bus terminal is called ZOB (Zentraler Omnibus Bahnhof).
Hamburg has bus and coach connections to several major cities. Autokraft is an operator that deals with travel between Hamburg and Berlin for example, a service that leaves several times a day.
Hamburg is divided into zones for the purpose of ticket sales for S-Bahn metro trains, underground trains, buses and river ferries. The central area of the city is referred to as “Nahbereich”, while the Greater Hamburg metropolitan area is called the “Grossbereich”. Bus tickets can be purchased from the driver or from the orange machines on the bus terminal platforms.
Airport buses will take around 30 minutes to get to the Hauptbahnhof and they run every 15 to 20 minutes between 5.00 am and 9.20 pm. An express service connects Altona station to the airport with a half hourly service.
Getting to Hamburg Airport by Taxi
Taxi travel is fairly cheap in Germany, reliable, very safe and extremely regulated with regard to fare pricing. Taxis in Germany are typically cream coloured Mercedes Benz vehicles and passengers for Hamburg Airport will be dropped off just outside the departure terminal. The taxi rank is outside of the two terminal buildings. It takes around 35 minutes from the city centre to the airport and the journey will cost around EUR 20.00 per taxi.
Licensed taxis clearly display a TAXI sign on the car roof and the name of the taxi operator will be shown at both sides of the vehicle. Most public phone booths will have the central reservation number for taxi services, otherwise the staff at the hotel will be able to call a taxi for the airport.
