Trains to and from Dusseldorf International Airport (DUS)
Düsseldorf Airport has its own train station offering metro line, regional and mainline services to passengers arriving or departing at the airport. There are regular train services to nearby cities like Aachen, Cologne and Wuppertal. Intercity ICE trains to Munich take less than six hours and trains to Berlin (Zoo Bahnhof) take around four hours to arrive.
It is also possible to arrive at Düsseldorf Airport from London, Amsterdam or Brussels using international train services.
Passengers looking for trains from Düsseldorf Airport to regional destinations can purchase a ticket from the ticket machines at the train station, but anyone heading for long distance train connections should use the services of the Reiseservice travel centres, which can be found at all main train stations and in most airports.
Deutsche Bahn (DB = German state railway) employees will be able to ascertain what is the cheapest way to travel to the final destination. Germany’s train ticketing system can be confusing, since there are so many discounting options available. Generally speaking, train travel is very cheap compared to other European countries such as the UK.
The airport offers underground and over-ground train services from its own station. The S-Bahn line 7 will take passengers into central Düsseldorf every 20 minutes. Some 350 trains stop at Düsseldorf Airport every day. There are IC trains to Hamburg-Altona leaving every other hour, trains to Amsterdam only take 2.5 hours and regular IC trains heading for Frankfurt leave hourly.
High speed trains for long distance journeys can also be boarded at the airport’s train station rather than having to travel all the way into the city centre to catch a train to Munich, Paris, Salzburg or Amsterdam. Train time tables are displayed on every platform of the train station.
Several airlines such as Lufthansa for example allow passengers to check-in at the train station instead of having to queue in the departure hall check-in area. It is advisable to reserve seats on long-distance journeys, since most ICE and IC trains get very busy at weekends and during school and public holidays.
It only cost a few additional Euros to reserve a seat and it is money well spent. All long-distance trains have specially designed luggage areas at the start and end of each carriage, where passengers can leave their luggage on shelves. There are also over-head shelves above all seats. It is generally frowned upon to use mobile phones while being seated in a carriage and some trains even have special carriages, where mobile phone usage is only permitted in the corridors but not while being seated in the main compartments.
Passengers should not that tickets cannot be purchased on the trains. Anyone found travelling on Düsseldorf Airport trains without a valid ticket will be fined (at least EUR 40.00) on the spot. For visitors who plan to use the local metro line services it may be of interest to learn that the tourist office located opposite the main train station offer tourists a Welcome Card that entitles the holder to use unlimited public transport in the city as well as two days’ worth of free admission to some of Düsseldorf’s museums and other attractions.
