Dusseldorf International Airport (DUS)

Düsseldorf Airport is Germany’s third largest international airport and it is based in the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia, covering some of the country’s most important hubs for business and commerce. It is located less than 10 km out of the city centre, making the destination a great option for a city break at any time of the year.

Around 16 million passengers travel in and out of Germany via Düsseldorf Airport every year. Indeed, it is the 20th busiest airport in Europe with some 75 airlines covering routes to 179 destinations around the globe. Throughout the day the airport carries out an average of 750 take-offs as well landings, making Düsseldorf one of North Rhine-Westphalia’s most visited and busiest places.

The airport is home to two runways, one being 2,700 m and the other being 3,000 meters in length. It is hoped that in the near future 600 meters in length can be added to the 3,000 m runway, which will enable even larger aircraft to land and take off.

Düsseldorf Airport has three terminals of which Terminal A has 16 gates alone. Terminal A is the base for Lufthansa and its Star Alliance members; mostly airline partners of Lufthansa use this terminal. Terminal A has two comfortable lounges for passengers to relax in, namely the Lufthansa Senator Lounge and the Lufthansa Business Lounge.

Terminal B opened in 1973 and offers no fewer than 11 gates for passenger boarding. The terminal handles domestic flights and European flight routes offered by Skyteam, Air Berlin and carriers like Finnair, KLM, British Airways, Air France and Iberia.

Terminal C is the latest addition to the airport and was inaugurated in 1986, boasting 8 gates. This terminal handles flights for carriers that are not members of the Star Alliance. The passenger lounges for international airlines Airberlin and Emirates are based here. An executive terminal for corporate and private clients provides comfort and relative privacy for VIPs and business travellers at Düsseldorf Airport.

The airport designed with disabled passengers in mind. Toilet facilities, ramps and barrier free departure and arrivals hall are part and parcel of a modern airport layout. Parking is free for drivers with a registered disability ID card.

Düsseldorf Airport is also equipped with ATMs and two banks for cash transactions, many cafes and snack bars, restaurants, baby changing rooms and a number of shops selling anything from fashion and accessories to mobile phones, perfume and toiletries to books and newspapers.

Porters are also available to passengers with heavy baggage and baggage storage as well as lost and found services deal with other baggage requirements passengers might have upon arrival. The non-denominational prayer halls allow passengers to find time and space for quiet contemplation and reflection, before commencing on their onward journey.

Passengers with access to the VIP lounges can find business services in the business and the VIP lounges. Düsseldorf Airport provides also conference facilities for the business community. The Steigenberger Conference Point offers conference rooms for up to 250 participants and the Arabella Sheraton Hotel can accommodated up to 230 people in their conference rooms.

The airport offers onward travel choices via car hire, bus, taxi and train. The city is located just 9 km away and frequent bus and metro train services transport passengers into central Düsseldorf in a reliable, fast and cost effective manner. The city has many excellent hotels and guesthouses for overnight accommodation. Passengers without a hotel booking should head for the information stand in the airport and ask for assistance.

Good motorway connections to the region and other major cities in Germany allow motorists with a car rental agreement to make the most of their hired car. With so many tourist attractions, international trade fairs and events taking place in the city, car hire is a great idea for a stay in Düsseldorf.
